My Children
By Meron Agonafer

Homeless you are scattered
Without a country you roam the earth
Scattered into the four corners of the globe
Like dust blown by wind
I have been turned into the poorest nation
Left without a friend
Struggling amidst a hostile world
My children, I am going through a true tribulation

My history is all forgotten
My greatness is all gone
My kings and queens cover their faces in shame
This sad chapter of history
Has made it hard even for the dead to come to terms with
The total misery I now find myself in is a great mystery

My own children have turned against me
Like soldiers who crucified Jesus
They have cast their lots to divide my pride and dignity
Selflessly they devour me
To sell their own motherland to satisfy their greed and little ego

Behold my children are suffering
My children are crying scattered in foreign lands
Disrespected, looked down upon
Their dignity and self-respect eroded
Their hope for life at all times low

Cry not my children
Everything will pass with time
All the tribulations you have gone through will be of things of past
Your mother Ethiopia will stretch her hands once again

As I stand on the hills of Addis
With my sword of judgement in one hand and the fire of liberty in the other
All those who sold me for cheap silver
Will cover their faces with shame
As I pass my judgement on each of them
According to their deeds
History will be a harsher judge
On those lowest forms of human breed

It will be a time of prosperity for my children and me
A time of double tragedy to all those who have worked hard to destroy me

The world will kneel down and bow before me
Many great nations would hasten to establish special relationships with me
The weak ones will find solace under my protection
I will gather all my children from the four corners of the globe
All evil things will pass away
Peace, justice and prosperity will characterize my new reign
And there will be plenty of milk and honey once again
